How SAI is Funded

The Spiritual Abuse Institute is funded primarily through the generous donations of individuals and churches. No matter how big or small, every donation helps us to advance the mission, help people heal from spiritual abuse, and build healthier and safer churches.

Our Commitment to Financial Transparency

The Spiritual Abuse Institute is committed to setting the example and leading the way in financial transparency. We want to ensure donors that every dollar is protected and goes directly to advancing the mission.

To accomplish this, we make the following commitments to our donors and supporters:

No salaries will be paid.

We will only pay for work completed to advance the mission directly. So, we will pay only 1099 contractors for work completed. For all work completed, detailed invoices will be stored and reviewed quarterly by the board of directors. All invoices can be made available upon request from donors at any time.

100% Open Books!

SAI will keep 100% open books. Our incoming and outgoing funds will never be hidden, and a detailed look at our up-to-date budget and P&L statement will always be available publicly. The board will also review updates quarterly and make them available to all donors annually.

Checks and Balances for Leadership

Before any money is paid to the Executive Director or any Board Member, it must be signed off on by two other officers, and the reason for the payment must be clearly documented. This documentation will be made available to donors upon request at any time.

The Executive Director will serve as the chairman of the board and will be responsible for planning and chairing board meetings but will not be a voting member. The Executive Director is the chief servant of the organization, is responsible to the board, and can be removed at any time if they are not stewarding the organization well and pursuing the mission, vision, and strategy.

Compensation Limits

The maximum amount any contractor can be paid by SAI will be capped at $75,000. This includes individual payments AND any payments made to businesses or other interests connected to a contractor. In the event a contractor reaches this limit for work completed to advance the SAI mission, we will parter with other independent contractors for the remainder of the year.

Low Overhead

At SAI, we are committed to keeping overhead expenses as low as possible. Since we don't have employees, donor funds are not used for benefits, payroll taxes, etc. We will limit the money spent on expenses such as office space and utilities. At the conclusion of each calendar year, the board will review expenses for any unnecessary or bloated expenses that could be lowered or removed.

Designated Funds Will Always Be Protected

Designated funds will ONLY be used for their designated purpose and will never be repurposed for any other use. In the event where a designated gift cannot be used for its intended purpose, it will be returned in full to the donor with a detailed explanation of why the intended project could not be completed or did not align with the mission of our work.

Simple Accounting that's Easy to Understand

We will use a simple cash accounting system until our annual budget exceeds $250,000. Once the budget passes this mark, we will move to an accrual accounting system and will begin annual independent audits in addition to open books.
